Runners Code of Conduct

Runners Etiquette: A guideline for safe and enjoyable running

Front Runner

Front Runner Sports aims to deliver safe, enjoyable and outcome driven running training sessions and programmes for all participants of the Front Runner community as they strive to beat their best. Before participating in a Front Runner training session or membership, please read in entirety our etiquette and Code of Conduct guidelines and follow them to the best of your ability during training sessions. By attending a training session or creating a membership, you accept that you are bound by the Front Runner ettiquette and Code of Conduct.

*We would like to thank and reference the great work from the Road Runners Club of America. For a full list of running safety and etiquette guidelines, please see their website HERE

Rules of the road and trails

  • If you are running on the road, run against the flow of traffic on the far right side of the road. If you’re running on the pedestrian path or multi-use trails/paths, travel on the left and pass on the right
  • When running in a group, ensure you don’t run more than two abreast and keep to the left. This will allow safe and efficient passing on your right.
  • Don’t run down the middle a road, trail or path.
  • If you are running an out-and-back route, avoid making a sudden U-turn at your turn around point. To safely U-turn, stop and step to the left to allow any traffic the opportunity to pass. Ensure the road or trail is clear of all oncoming traffic then make your U-turn.
  • Alert fellow runners and pedestrians when you are passing them. A simple “on your right” warning will suffice.
  • Be alert on blind curves.
  • Ensure you follow any road rules, including stopping at stop signs and checking left and right for traffic before crossing roads.
  • Respect private property along your route
  • Don’t litter. If you can’t find a rubbish bin, ensure you carry your rubbish with you.

Rules of the Athletics Track

  • Don’t step onto the track until you are ready to run and immediately start your rep or interval
  • As soon as you finish your rep or interval, immediately step off the track before slowing down or stopping
  • Ensure you stay in the same lane when running around the track
  • Only run in single file around the track when running in a group
  • If you need to pass a runner, go around to the right to pass them and once you are clearly in front of them, move back into your original lane.
  • All runners are welcome on the track, no matter what pace they are training at
  • If a runner is on the track but is not completing a rep or interval, you may call out “track” to make them aware that you are coming towards them. If you hear “track” it is your responsibility to swiftly move to the left and off to the inside of the track
  • If you are moving across the infield of a track, ensure you check for field users such as javelin or hammer throwers. They are entitled to use the infield and if they are present, it is your responsibility to move around the inside of the track behind the throwers and not directly across the infield.

Health & Safety

  • If you feel the session is beyond your current fitness capabilities, then please advise the coach at the session who can prescribe an appropriate alternative if required.
  • If you have been unwell and are unsure whether you will be able to complete the specified training session, please advise the coach who can prescribe an appropriate alternative if required.
  • If you are currently sick with a virus or cold, please do not attend a group training session to avoid transferring the sickness on to a fellow runner.

Running with Headphones

  • Use of music whilst running is strongly discouraged in the group environment of a Front Runner Training session due to a lack of concentration, inability to hear and follow instructions from the coaches as well as the anti-social aspect
